What's in My Bag: Two Weeks in Sri Lanka (Carry-On Luggage)

Greetings from Sri Lanka, the 50th country I've visited! I flew into Bandaranaike International Airport on Saturday and I'm spending the next two weeks exploring the teardrop-shaped island in the Indian Ocean. My holiday will include a mix of urban exploration, cultural and archaeological visits, hikes in Tea Country, safaris and beach time. Read on to find out what I brought with me and how I packed everything into a cabin-size suitcase and a personal item.

Where To Eat on the Beach in Cannes (2024)

Cannes, the beautiful city on the French Riviera, has some of the best restaurants in the South of France. Cannes offers something for all palates — yes, there are a lot of expensive, high-end venues, but check out my guide to visiting Cannes on a budget if you are looking for more cost-effective ways to make the most of the city. But one thing is certain: a trip to Cannes wouldn't be complete without at least one meal on the golden sand overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. Here are some of the beach eateries I enjoyed on my most recent trip last month (plus a couple of bonus recommendations from previous stays).

What's in My Bag: Four Days in Cannes (Personal Item Only)

After a summer that never really took off in London, I was glad to escape for a few days of sunshine at the end of August to stay at my parents' apartment in Cannes. By flying out on Friday evening and returning late on Tuesday night, I had full four days of sun, sea and steak-frites in the glamorous French Riviera city (check out my guide to spending a day in Cannes on a 50 euro budget). And, always striving to travel light, I packed everything into one under-seat bag. Here's what I packed for my four-day trip.

The Lewes Caffeine Chronicles: Pharmacie Coffee Roasters

Although I've been drinking coffee from Sussex-based Pharmacie Coffee Roasters since 2018, somehow it took me until this month to visit their roastery and coffee bar in the heart of the South Downs in Lewes. To be fair, even though they've been around a lot longer, the roastery has only been in Lewes since 2021 and suffice it to say, my visit was well worth the wait.

How To Spend a Long Weekend in Sofia, Bulgaria

As March turned into April, it was time for me to go exploring again. My destination? Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria: a new city for me and the 49th country I've visited. During my four-day trip, I learned a great deal about Sofia's complex and fascinating history, admired striking and diverse architecture, took several excellent tours with passionate locals and ate delicious food. I even managed a side trip to a UNESCO-listed monastery perched high in the Rila mountains and to the city of Plovdiv. Read on to find out all of my recommendations for spending a long weekend in Plovdiv.

Seven Specialty Coffee Shops To Visit in Sofia, Bulgaria

Earlier this month, I spent an enjoyable — and very well caffeinated — long weekend in Sofia. The specialty coffee scene in the Bulgarian capital has been growing in recent years, with a number of new cafes joining longer-established coffee spots. This meant I didn't make it to all of the venues on my list; I was also a few weeks early for Sofia Coffee Week. But I did visit seven Sofia coffee shops and drank lots of delicious coffee, enjoying chats with some lovely coffee people. I even managed a specialty coffee pitstop on my very brief visit to the city of Plovdiv — scroll to the end of this post for the details.

The Caffeine Chronicles: Nostos Coffee, St James's Park

My favourite London coffee opening of 2021 was Nostos Coffee's original Battersea cafe. Nostos lives up to its name (from the Greek for 'homecoming') — I felt at home there from my first visit. Their coffee is impressive too. Nostos's second coffee shop goes even further, with an experience bar, where you can enjoy unique coffees and brewing techniques.
