Back in April, I spent the Easter weekend in Vienna. It was a memorable trip, filled with coffee, cake and culture and my stay at Hotel Altstadt, a luxurious boutique hotel in the heart of the cool 7th district was one of the best parts of my holiday.

Hotel Altstadt is located on a quiet side street in the arty 7th district. The hotel occupies an elegant historic townhouse building and from the moment you enter the front door and make your way up the spiral staircase, you'll get a taste of the art that awaits.
The staff and the warm, friendly service they provided was one of the stand-outs of my stay. Although I arrived hours before check-in, the receptionist welcomed me inside, offered me coffee and water and stored my luggage. I was welcome to wait in the beautiful salon but I went out to explore Vienna instead.
The rooms have all been individually designed by artists and designers, many of them local. My Medium double room was the work of fashion designer Arthur Arbesser and featured a courtyard view.
Breakfast was one of the selling points of Hotel Altstadt for me, with most food coming from local suppliers. Taken in the elegant salon, it includes hot drinks, a juice shot and a hot dish — eggs cooked to order or a daily-changing special (both the waffles and the eggs Benedict were great).
The salon and living room are one of the best parts of Hotel Altstadt. You can relax there over a drink or a slice of cake, reading a book or maybe playing a game of chess, feeling like you're living the Viennese lifestyle...for a few days at least.
Hotel Altstadt is located in Neubaum in Vienna's hip 7th district. To get there from Vienna airport, I took the S7 S-Bahn train to Wien Mitte and the U3 metro to Volkstheater, 10 minute' walk from the hotel. I got from plane to hotel in just 50 minutes! The City Airport Train is slightly faster but more expensive.
Definitely! Hotel Altstadt has truly mastered the art of hospitality — and the art they showcase is great too! The hotel is a beautiful and peaceful place to stay in a great Vienna neighbourhood that is central but not too hectic. My room was gorgeous and comfortable, breakfast (and cake) excellent and the staff very welcoming.

The vibe
Hotel Altstadt is located on a quiet side street in the arty 7th district. The hotel occupies an elegant historic townhouse building and from the moment you enter the front door and make your way up the spiral staircase, you'll get a taste of the art that awaits.
Walking between my room and the reception and salon felt like I was staying in the apartment of a friend with exceptionally good taste and there's more than a hint of Accidentally Wes Anderson. You can even take a guided tour to learn more about the artworks on display.
By the time I returned, my bag had already been taken to my room. Each day, little sweet treats appeared on my pillow and on Easter Sunday, I received a plantable seed card, alongside a hand-written note from the team. Little touches like these made me feel at home and no request was ever too much trouble.
I also loved how the website includes profiles of the (mostly female) team, along with their insiders' tips for the best things to see, do and eat in Vienna.
The room

As a solo traveller, I usually opt for the smallest room category but as the Medium room was only €10 more, I decided to upgrade. The room itself was modern, quiet and spacious (around 25 square metres or 270 square feet), with high ceilings.
The walls' cobalt blues was just my taste and there was plenty of space for a leather arm chair and a desk. The bed featured a gorgeous Arbesser print and was very comfortable. I slept well every night — and not just because I was tired from all the touristing!
The en suite bathroom had vibrant blue and orange tiling, a powerful shower, delightful organic toiletries from Lederhaas, plush bathrobes and slippers.
The food and drink
Breakfast was one of the selling points of Hotel Altstadt for me, with most food coming from local suppliers. Taken in the elegant salon, it includes hot drinks, a juice shot and a hot dish — eggs cooked to order or a daily-changing special (both the waffles and the eggs Benedict were great).
There's also an extensive buffet, which has everything from breads and pastries, to charcuterie, fruit and bubbly. On Easter Sunday, I took a turquoise egg from a bowl, only to worry it was actually decorative! (Luckily, it was hard-boiled.)
Guests are welcome to relax in the salon at any time but the best time to go is tea time. Every day from 4 to 6 pm, you can choose a tea from the wide selection on offer and serve yourself a slice of cake. The cake changed every day but my favourite was the cheesecake with berry compote. When in Vienna!
In the evening, the salon becomes a bar. There's also a rooftop terrace but it's only open from May to September so I didn't get to check it out. This was a shame as the weather was unseasonably warm, hitting 25C on Easter Sunday! A good excuse to go back...
The facilities

Beyond that, there's the rooftop terrace, bikes available to borrow (on a first-come, first-served basis) and a small gym with strength and cardio equipment. And if you like the products featured featured in the hotel, you can buy some of them in the shop. I loved my room key so much, I bought the keyring!

The 7th district is a great neighbourhood for a laid-back city break with its elegant architecture and many independent shops, like Sous-Bois and Ina Kent, and eateries (don't miss the sweet treats at Crème de la Crème).
The hustle and bustle of the city centre is 25 minutes' walk — or take a metro, bus or tram. If you plan to visit any of Vienna's excellent museums, you'll be glad to know that MuseumsQuartier is right on your doorstep.

Would I go back?
Definitely! Hotel Altstadt has truly mastered the art of hospitality — and the art they showcase is great too! The hotel is a beautiful and peaceful place to stay in a great Vienna neighbourhood that is central but not too hectic. My room was gorgeous and comfortable, breakfast (and cake) excellent and the staff very welcoming.
They asked me to complete a survey after my stay and I couldn't think of any negatives. That's still the case several months later. As it was such a warm weekend, a swimming pool would have been lovely but given the historic building and limited space, I suspect that won't ever be on the cards!
