When I wasn't
visiting Palma de Mallorca's cathedrals, castles and coves, I made time to explore the city's burgeoning specialty coffee scene. Mallorca has several specialty coffee roasteries, as well as many other cafes serving coffee from top roasters from mainland Spain and beyond. The brunch offering is impressive too. Read on to find out my favourite coffee discoveries in Palma.
To start my day, I used the coffee machine in my room at
Nakar Hotel to brew the espresso pods I got from
Green Routes in Oxford. The coffee tasted great and the incredible view from the rooftop pool only sweetened the experience. My KeepCup certainly thought so!
There was plenty of excellent coffee to be found beyond my hotel too. I've mapped the Palma coffee shops I visited: as usual, my top picks have purple icons. I've also included some of the places on my list I didn't get to visit this time. In particular,
Mise en Place, which was next to my hotel but was unfortunately closed during my stay.
Mama Carmen's,
Noti and
Kofi also come highly recommended.
Dating back to 1952, Arabay is one of Mallorca's oldest roasters. They've evolved a lot since then, now selling a wide variety of single origin specialty coffees in their signature colourful packaging.
They have two cafes in Palma: their flagship on Carrer del Syndicat, near Plaça Major, and a location inside Mercat l'Olivar. I visited the latter after shopping in the market, and had a very tasty cortado, brewed with their 1952 specialty blend, which combines coffees from Brazil, Colombia and Kenya.
Arabay is located at Mercat l'Olivar (and Carrer del Sindicat, 5). Website. Instagram.
Palma has many wonderful brunch spots but I didn't try very many, as I was usually at the beach or on a boat during the brunching hour. But on my first day, when I arrived too early to check in to my hotel, I was grateful to find Bacan so close by.
The small cafe has a lovely, verdant patio at the back. I cooled off with an espresso tonic brewed with coffee from Madrid roaster
Hola Coffee, before digging into my Turkish eggs. An auspicious start to a well-caffeinated stay in Palma!
Bacan is located at Carrer del Baró de Santa Maria del Sepulcre, 12. Instagram.
For regular readers, Berlin-based roaster The Barn needs no introduction. I've visited several of their
coffee shops in Berlin — and their
newly opened London cafe. The Barn has been in Palma since 2022 and recently moved to a new location on La Rambla. There's seating inside if you need air con, or you can perch on the little bench outside.
I treated my KeepCup to a cortado made with a natural coffee from El Salvador. It was beautifully brewed and I loved chatting to the baristas about the coffee scene in Mallorca and London. You can also choose from a wide range of single-origin beans to take home.
The Barn is located at La Rambla, 15. Website. Instagram.
I was pleased that I worked out that the Catalan pronunciation of Batx is 'batch' before I saw the explanation on their website! Serving coffee from
Dutch roaster Lot 61, Batx has two cafes in Palma. I visited the Arxiduc location, which was handy for the
train to Sóller.
There's a lovely, relaxed atmosphere in the spacious, verdant coffee shop. They serve a big selection of toasts, 'jaffles', bagels and other brunch dishes, but I just ordered a coffee. The batch brew, of course, which was a chocolatey coffee from Honduras.
Batx is located at Carrer de l'Arxiduc Lluís Salvador, 7 (and Carrer de Despuig, 63). Website. Instagram.
Before heading on a
trip to the beach, I stopped for coffee at Menut Cafe, a petite but perfectly formed coffee shop near hotel, just off Avenida Jaime III. The coffee is from
Barcelona roaster Nomad, and my cortado was delicious: sweet and smooth. I sat at one of the tables outside, but if there's a cooler space to sit inside too. As well as the usual espresso drinks, the welcoming staff serve cold brew, juices, pastries and brunch dishes.
Menut Cafe is located at Passeig de Mallorca, 14. Website. Instagram.
La Molienda has been roasting in Mallorca since 2013 and now has
two cafes — soon to be three — in Palma. I visited their Arxiduc location before
my trip to Sóller. They had two single origin espressos on offer: I went for a cortado with a natural Colombian coffee that tasted super with a little milk. The latte art was impressive too — kudos to the lovely barista who brewed my drink. You can buy retail bags of beans and they also serve pastries, sweet treats and brunch.
La Molienda is located at Carrer de l'Arxiduc Lluís Salvador, 9a (and Carrer del Bisbe Campins, 11). Website. Instagram.
Founded in 2017, Mistral Coffee roasts their coffee locally with two coffee shops in Palma's old town. I'd planned to stop for coffee at their Plaça de Weyler coffee shop on my last day but arrived back late from the beach when they were about to close. But I did take a look inside the beautiful cafe — which also has outdoor seating in Plaça de Weyler — and select a bag of beans to take home.
They had some superb coffees on offer and it was hard to choose, but in the end, I went for a natural Ethiopian Rocko Mountain Reserve, which I've been brewing at home this week. The strawberry and blueberry notes come through beautifully in my V60. I also sampled Mistral's coffee at Surry Hills (see below).
Mistral Coffee is located at Plaça de Weyler, A2 (and Carrer del Banc, 4). Website. Instagram.
It was no coincidence that my hotel was a few minutes' walk from several excellent coffee shops, including Nano Coffee Lab. Tucked away on Carrer de Can Asprer, just off Avenida Jaime III, Nano's small size belies its fantastic coffee offering.
The knowledgeable and friendly baristas serve coffees from some top European roasters like
Nomad and
April, as well as a small selection of pastries and sandwiches. I had a natural Kenyan coffee roasted by
Paris-based Tanat (formerly Kawa). Brewed as a filter coffee, it had juicy nectarine and plum flavours.
Nano Coffee Lab is located at Carrer de Can Asprer, 2. Instagram.
Surry Hills is a lovely slice of Sydney right in the heart of Palma. They serve coffee from Mistral and a menu filled with all the Aussie brunch classics and much more. I got a cold brew, which was brewed with their Meet Me at Surry blend. I sometimes find cold brew a bit blah, but Surry Hills' was excellent with juicy citrus flavours and a very drinkable sweetness. They also have a sister cafe,
Hotto, which serves Japanese brunch.
Surry Hills is located at Carrer del Carme, 12 (and their sister cafe, Hotto, is at Plaça de Raimundo Clar, 12). Website. Instagram.
Bonus recommendation: Sóller
In the mountain town of Sóller, I happened upon a lovely specialty coffee and brunch cafe called Coccum. It was a super-hot day and the refreshing cold brew, made with coffee roasted by Jaleo, was just what I needed. The cafe only opened a few weeks ago and it's located at Carrer d'Isabel II, 2, close to the train station and tram stop.
