The Brighton Caffeine Chronicles: Dharma Specialty Coffee

I've been spending more time in Brighton over the past year since some of my family moved down that way. I haven't had the chance to do a full speciality coffee update yet — check out my mini-guide from 2020 — but I have been able to visit Dharma Specialty Coffee in Brighton's North Laine. In fact, I liked it so much, I've returned several times and had an enjoyable experience each time.

Dharma Coffee was founded by Mustafa Perçin in 2021. As well as the Brighton coffee shop on North Road, there are sister cafés in Hove and Richmond. The central location is very handy if you're in need of caffeination after arriving at Brighton station or before heading to North Laine to do some shopping. Or both, in fact!

Inside, the café offers a peaceful and attractively decorated respite away from the hustle and bustle of central Brighton. The tables at the front window are best for people-watching and if you walk past the long, slender coffee bar, you can find a cosy nook at the back where the bench seating is kitted out with coffee-bag cushions. The décor features lots of natural wood and botanical artwork (NB: my photos are from multiple visits so there are a few small differences in décor).

The coffee comes from Murmuration Coffee Co, a roaster based in Chichester, 30 miles west. I hadn't tried their coffee before but I was impressed with the Community Espresso, a blend of Brazilian and Colombian coffees roasted for Dharma.

It tasted delicious with a little milk as a piccolo and the chocolate and raspberry notes came out nicely when I tried it on espresso. Dharma serves their coffees in Huskee Cups, one of my go-to to-go cup brands (and OMG, I did not need to see that they have a gorgeous new range in Wolves colours!), and the piccolos are always brewed to a very high standard, with excellent latte art.

There are also retail bags of coffee on sale and each time, I've visited, there have been some really special coffees available, including an Ethiopian Gesha, and a Yemeni coffee from Mocha Hunters. The baristas are also super-friendly and it's a lovely, relaxing place to hang out over a coffee and a pastry or cake.
